Eotech 512 vs. Eotech 518 – How do they differ?

Optical Features

The Eotech 512 and Eotech 518 are ideally made to be used in short and medium range applications, and they are at home in shooting ranges where the target is still and out in the wild where targets are fast moving.

The Eotech 512 is fitted with a 22mm diameter objective lens which comes with a conveniently wide angle of view. In addition, this lens features a clever build that ensures maximum light transmission and minimal glare. Its 1 MOA reticle size is ideal for high precision shooting, and it covers a size of 1 inch on the target from a distance of 100 yards. For high precision, the lens is made to have minimal parallax, and it also offers unlimited eye relief. This way, keeping your eye on the target becomes easy. The 68MOA ring comes in handy during close range shooting, and it also accords users high precision for targets that are closer than 50 yards.

The Eotech 518 follows suit in similar fashion, bringing with it a 22mm objective lens that is made using glass and laminate for enhanced strength and durability. For a red dot, it presents a 1 MOA reticle and an additional 68 MOA ring that can be used independently. Also a non-parallax lens, you can be certain that target acquisition will be easy and accurate. The lens is also created to offer unlimited eye relief that guarantees exact measurements where targets are concerned.

Since the Eotech 512 and the Eotech 518 have exact optical features, neither is ranked above the other in this regard.

Overall Performance

The main downside to this scope is that it does not support Night Vision, meaning that you will not be able to use it in the cover of dark. Its controls are set on the back, a characteristic that many users find inconvenient since you have to block your view as you change settings.

Just like the Eotech 512, the Eotech 518 also comes with 20 brightness adjustment features, but it also does not support Night Vision. This makes it only ideal for day use. On the plus side, its controls are placed on the right side, allowing for easy settings adjustments without necessarily having to block your line of vision. This feature is however, mostly favorable to ambidextrous people who can use both hands easily.

Since the Eotech 518 comes with its control panel on the side, it makes for a better scope than the Eotech 512 scope.

Just like the Eotech 512, it has a 5.6 inches length and a weight on 11.5 oz.

Both devices bear similar constructional features, setting them on equal footing in this regard.

Battery Life

A scope’s battery life is one of its most significant features, especially for persons who go hunting in the wild for weeks and moths at a time. This is why thee scopes’ battery live comes as something of a disappointment.

The Eotech 512 comes with a battery life of 2,500 hours which is a bit decent. However, most competitors in its caliber come with 30,000 to 50,000 hours of battery life.

Similarly, the Eotech 518 comes with a similar battery life, delivering a maximum of 2,500 hours. This is a bot disappointing, and you may have to carry a backup battery with you in case you are going off for a long time.

The Eotech 512 and Eotech 518 have similar battery lives, giving them similar rating in this respect.
